Romuald Cousy exemplifies the words of the 17th century French dramatist Pierre Corneille “In souls nobly born, valour does not depend upon age,” since he founded his noble estate in 2016 at the age of… 22! After first being trained by Vincent Alexis of Château Barouillet, Romuald simply decided he’d rather make the jump sooner than later, and found himself a cellar and 4 hectares of vines for rent, in the middle of the Côtes-de-Duras appellation. Given the region’s traditionalist image, he’d decide to have his wines labelled Vins de France instead – just one example of his determination to rewrite the rulebook. Ever since, with energy, passion and determination, Romuald been producing decidedly proper juice! The estate is farmed biodynamically, keeping the yields quite low – only 15 hl/ha on average! In the winery, he vinifies his grapes whole cluster quite often for the reds to retain his beautiful freshness, with a little carbonic maceration to keep them thirst quenching, while adding not one molecule of synthetic chemicals, and sulphur only when necessary.
