Lalou Bize Leroy

Lalou Bize-Leroy is without a doubt the grande dame of Burgundy. A legend, whose career includes such modest accomplishments as running Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from 1974 to 1992 with co-owner Aubert de Villaine. At the head of the Maison Leroy since 1971, Lalou has devoted herself to the purchase of additional parcels, handpicking vineyards to expand the estate, which today boasts a total of 22 hectares of vines, including 9 Grands Crus, 8 Premiers Crus and 8 Appellations Villages. She then founded the tiny yet now mythic estate Domaine d'Auvenay, based in Saint-Romain. This passionate climber has never stopped moving mountains for her vines, imposing a vision both unique and uncompromising. She converted the entire estate over to biodynamic viticulture in September 1988, has never exceeded a yield of 15 hectolitres per hectare, and has allowed some of her vines to grow to more than 3 metres long because, for Lalou, “the vine is more like an animal than a plant. The bud is conceived in June and comes out in March, nine months later. To separate the vine from its final bud would be to separate it from the life it carries within itself for the following year”. She seeks to make wines that express the identity of each vineyard site, of each parcel.

Today, Maison Leroy embodies the quintessence of Burgundy wine. The wines have beautiful energy, concentration and density. They are choice bottles indeed, crafted for the cellar.
