Jeff Coutelou runs the family estate not far from Béziers, and his bottles are easily recognized by their labels with such striking names as La Buvette à Paulette or 7, rue de la Pompe. But what defines Mas Coutelou more than any catchy label is the fact that his 15 hectares of vines haven’t been touched by pesticides since 1987. It’s what’s in the bottle, though, that really shows what he and his wines are all about – warmth and down-to-earth conviviality. Because Coutelou’s wines are above all about authentic pleasure; they are generous, it’s wine that you want to drink among friends, wine which loosens our tongues. Put your nose in Le Vin des Amis, this explosion of Syrah and Grenache so full of fruit, and then taste it, and soon enough you’ll be opening another. To be enjoyed without moderation, regardless of what right-thinking folks may tell us. It’s elegance meets pure indulgence. A glorious example of organic wine. Very little or no sulphur, no commercial yeasts, soils worked with care… Everything done here contributes to give nature room to do most of the work. That is the spirit of Jeff Coutelou. And nature doesn’t disappoint him, nor us.
