Henry-Frédéric Roch

Henry-Frédéric Roch, who died in 2018, was the son of Pauline, the sister of Lalou Bize-Leroy, and the grandson of Henry Leroy, a vigneron and négociant lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy 50% of Romanée-Conti in 1942. Since 1992, Henry-Fredéric co-directed the estate with Aubert de Villaine. He took on that role upon the passing of Henry Roch, when Henry-Frédéric was only 30 years old... And yet 4 years earlier, he had already founded his own estate. It was 1988, and here was a man already beginning to create natural Burgundies of the purest possible expression. Henry-Frédéric was a true vigneron, talented, full of fire and passion, and his role at DRC would help it to evolve towards producing wines completely without artifice, pure and natural... Is a Romanée-Conti not the most natural wine in the world? The logo of Prieuré-Roch represents hieroglyphs, inspired by two ancient cultures: the Egyptians, who 5000 years ago considered wine to be such a precious commodity that it was used as an offering to the gods; and the Greeks, who helped develop our first systematic approach to vine training. Henry-Frédéric’s name, too, will be etched in stone for generations to come.
