The label of this wine is a Maori design drawn by Heidi Kuka, Julien’s partner. As the eldest son of Claude Courtois, Julien is determined to take us on a voyage far beyond his native Sologne with this 100% Gamay de Chaudenay cuvée. A rare teinturier (literally, ‘dyer’) grape variety once used to add colour to other wines, now mostly found near Ancenis. Vinification: the Courtois DNA is definitely present! A natural wine without compromise, zero chemicals, grapes harvested at full maturity, natural vinification, matured in barrels, bottled in spring 2019, without sulphur!
Julien Courtois, child of the 1976 vintage, is the eldest of two sons born to Claude Courtois, one of the most monumental figures in natural wine. Julien has had his own, separate production for nearly 20 years – Le Clos de la Bruyère – and his approach is the same as his father’s, though with a sensibility all his own.
