Vilain - 2019 - Matthieu Barret

A nose with notes of tart red berries and sweet spices... With its crisp and fluid palate, this is a very pleasurable juice. The name vilain may mean ‘naughty’, but enjoyment like this should be guilt free!

100% Syrah from Matthieu's négociant business. The vines belong to Emmanuel Tracol (in Roussas) and Florent Bacconnier (in Eclassan), two vignerons in their first year of operation and in conversion to organic farming. In Roussas, the vines are 20 years old, on sandy soil. At Eclassan, 400 metres above sea level, the 35-year-old vines are planted on granitic sands. Vinification: two weeks of maceration at low temperatures, pressing in a pneumatic press, and nine months of maturation in 46-hl vats. Bottled with just a microdose of sulphur.

Matthieu Barret

Matthieu Barret has been making wine at Domaine du Coulet since 1998. It was Stéphane Tissot, one of Jura's most famous vignerons, who first gave Barret the nickname "Petit Ours Brun" (little brown bear), and it quickly caught on among his vigneron peers, and even found its way onto his wine labels, such as his red and white cuvées Petit Ours Brun and Petit Ours Blanc.
