Château le Puy

Retour des Îles - 2015 - Pascal Amoreau

In the purest sense, this wine is the encapsulation of a dream, a moment of philosophy, an invitation to take a voyage... A garnet robe, and a powerful nose of red fruits. A perfectly balanced palate, round and full-bodied, with flesh and length. This wine is ready to be enjoyed today, but also has wonderful potential for ageing. All in a lovely old-style bottle, wide-based and heavy.

Created from a vineyard co-planted with 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Carménère, all from vines cultivated extremely judiciously. The Amoreau family’s approach to vinification is unique: the grapes are placed whole in a cement vat, with a few staves holding the cap down, while the fermenting juice overflows onto a kind of cement ledge where it cools down then naturally returns into the vat; a completely natural form of thermoregulation and oxygenation.

The journey by sea: the casks were loaded onto the schooner Goélette "De Gallant" in La Rochelle. After travelling down the Spanish coast, they made a first stop at the Portuguese island of Madeira. They continued along their way as far as Cape Verde, and then set off across the Atlantic Ocean. Several port calls followed: Barbados, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Martinique... The adventure continued along the coast of Central America, fromMexico to Nicaragua. By then steeped in sea air and beautiful landscapes, they sailed home to Bordeaux. After a year at sea, they’d finally returned to Château Le Puy’s cellars, to be bottled at last.
