Monkey Gone to Heaven - 2019 - Craig Hawkins
Testalonga / El Bandito
A rich, robust Mourvèdre with notes of mint, violet and pepper. Palate: this is concentrated juice with great length, a wine made in homage to the Pixies – so no surprise it rocks in the glass!

A 100% Mourvèdre cuvée, from vines planted in 2001 on a 1-ha parcel of decomposed granite soils, located in the Paardeberg, a mountainous region 50 km northeast of Cap. Organic and biodynamic farming is practiced to promote biodiversity, the vines are not irrigated, zero chemicals are used, and yields are around 20 hl/ha... Vinification without artifice, gentle extraction, and low alcohol... Fermentation of whole bunches, 10 days in open vats (without carbonic maceration), fermentation and maturation in 500-litre demi-muid barrels. Unfiltered, a pinch of sulphur at bottling, and basta!

Craig Hawkins
Craig Hawkins and his wife Carla live in the mountainous region of Paardeberg north of Cape Town. The estate was founded in 2008 with 10 ha of rented vines, while Craig continued to glean as much knowledge as possible from such winemakers as Eben Sabie (star of South African wine) and Thomas Lubbe of Domaine Matassa, himself a South African. Then, in 2014 the Hawkins purchased 8 ha of vines....
