The first book in English on Chartreuse liqueurs and the Elixir Vegetal, published by Chartreuse Diffusion.
It took more than three years to write this book, such is the richness and depth of its content and illustrations. Its greatest strength lies in its authenticity, thanks first and foremost to the involvement of the Reverend Father of the Grande Chartreuse. He opened up and pored over his personal archives, making it possible to reconstruct the authentic history—cleared of the inaccuracies that oral tradition had long perpetuated or maintained.
Through this book, the working group (composed of former executives of Chartreuse Diffusion and friends of the Carthusians) sought to offer everyone—the curious, enthusiasts, tourists, and collectors—the true epic story of the liqueur.
A unique experience shared by the working group, which was used to enrich the book, along with the testimonies of Chartreuse alumni, lend this work a great deal of soul. The photographs, of exceptional quality, were taken by Stéphane Couchet, a photographer based in Chartreuse who has succeeded in capturing the depth and grandeur of the Grande Chartreuse monastery, conveying the authenticity of the Chartreuse monks, and bringing the Chartreuse bottles and flasks to life.
A comprehensive and previously unpublished section on bottles is presented at the end of the book. It is the result of extensive research based on the invaluable notes left by a former distiller-brother, Brother Marie Bernard.
Featuring a foreword by the Reverend Father, a comprehensive history from its origins (1605) to the present day, testimonials from three former executives of Chartreuse Diffusion, “The Great Future of the Liqueur,” and an illustrated booklet showcasing Chartreuse bottles throughout history.
