Roussillon
A spectacular nose with notes of exotic fruits, citrus fruits, pear and elderflowers. Palate: great purity (as you’d expect from Castex), an intense and luscious wine, with a long, mineralesque finish. One of our favourites.
A blend of Macabeu, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and Bourboulenc from vines farmed organically and planted on sandy and kaolin clay. Very low yields, with each vine individually pampered. Vinification: only the first juice from the direct pressing (none of the final press juice, so very qualitative), then fermentation in 220-litre amphorae, and 9 months of maturation on lees in amphorae. Bottled when the moon was right, without fining or filtration, and zero added sulphur.
Alain Castex, an iconic figure in the region of Banyuls and Roussillon, produced wines of another era. He refused to use any oenological additives. Producing in small volumes, his wines had always been ultra-confidential, at most 5000 bottles in the biggest years. Such is the fruit of this impassioned winemaker’s labours, this uncompromising and extremely meticulous man. Le Casot des Mailloles...
