Anton Von Klopper
Anton Von Klopper is the leading figure of natural wine in Australia. A perfectionist almost to the point of madness, at once uncompromising yet unpredictable, his estate is renowned the world over today.Starting in 2002, he created his estate entirely from scratch, in the hills of Adelaide. Anton produces an artist’s wines, not a chemist’s, and designs the labels of each cuvée himself a few hours before bottling. In 2017, he made the decision to drastically reduce his production, cutting his previous 120 tons in half to now produce only 60 a year. Anton has created his own cartel of natural winemakers: "The Natural Selection Theory", which like an experimental jazz group is constantly seeking and exploring new avenues in wine. Maturations in eucalyptus wood barrels, beers blended with a light red wine... these are just a few examples of these vignerons’ mad experiments! Klopper vinifications are veritable high-wire acts, performed without a net, where the risk is certain but the goal is to reveal a wine’s true identity.
A nose with notes of cherry, grapefruit peel, blueberry, driftwood, and a hint of minerals... Palate: light, refreshing and fruity, with lace-like elegance. Surprising, even puzzling, but delicious – a real discovery.
