Jim Clendenen was undoubtedly the most emblematic figure of the Californian wine renaissance. Nothing predestined him to play such a role... Clendenen was born in Ontario, in a region with very little access to wine and gastronomy. It was during his college year abroad in France in 1974 when during a month spent in Burgundy and Champagne he finally discovered “life beyond tacos”, as he likes to put it. He became so passionate that he immediately decided to left his law studies. Returning to California in 1978, he learned winemaking over the course of three vintages at Zaca Mesa Winery. Then in 1982 he founded Au Bon Climat, based on the idea (rather crazy at the time) of an estate dedicated solely to Burgundy grape varieties. As the years passed, Jim planted his vines and, above all, sourced the best vineyards in California to provide himself with the highest quality grapes possible. A work of conviction and passion which elevated Jim Clendenen to the status of California’s most colourful and influential winemaker. He sadly left us in 2021.

The 41st vintage of this cuvée, and a true classic. In a Burgundian style, it opens with aromas of red berries and forest floor. The palate is all about finesse, with a perfect balance of tannins and acidity, beautiful depth and texture. A wine made for the table, perfect with... burgers!

The nose is driven by notes of lemon zest, fresh floral notes—particularly chamomile—flint, and hazelnut... The palate is mineral with lovely body, plenty of tension, and a delicately creamy texture. The finish is long, precise, briny, and fresh—a far cry from typical California styles.

Rare wine of remarkable complexity, on notes of candied strawberry, cherry, blood orange and bay leaf. The palate is dense and fully in line with the nose, harmonious and lifted by hints of baking spices and strawberry tart. Broad structure with fine tannins and excellent aging potential.

A densely complex nose with notes of wild strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry, supported by lovely herbal notes and hints of white and green tea. Complex and long on the palate, with aromatic notes of cherry and caramel, pronounced tannins, beautiful structure, and a subtly oaky finish.

Complex, powerful and highly aromatic nose, unfolding notes of cherry, strawberry, cranberry, anise and forest floor. The palate lives up to the nose, silky, delicate and nuanced, with subtle spice and a beautiful line of acidity. Decanting recommended, with excellent aging potential.
