A great wine before being a great Champagne, with a nose of pear, peach, butter-roasted pineapple and a hint of violet. The palate is vinous and dense, mineral and structured, with beautiful tension and notes of dried fruits. Powerful, long finish, both chalky and saline.
Vincent Assailly
Vincent Assailly, broad-shouldered and Viking-like in stature, is a vigneron based in Avize, one of the most prestigious villages of the Côte des Blancs. Since 2000, he has been at the helm of Champagne Assailly-Leclaire et Fils, that farms 11 hectares of Chardonnay. Founded by his great-grandfather in 1899, the estate has seen a lineage of passionate men, beginning with his son Maurice, who became team leader at Perrier-Jouët. From Maurice’s marriage to Marie-Louise Leclaire came Christian — and also the creation of Champagne Mongamin, an affectionate nickname he gave his son. It was the first time in the family’s history that the grower vinified his own harvest. Finally in 1948, the House’s name changed to Assailly-Leclaire et Fils. Christian and his wife Jacqueline took the reins, growing the estate from 3 to 11 hectares and significantly elevating the quality of the Champagnes. The tradition lives on today through Vincent — to our great delight when tasting.
