Gamay, of course! Natural, obviously! The estate’s soils are complex, rich in iron oxide and crisscrossed by veins of manganese, shale and very old igneous rock known as “roche pourrie” or rotten rock. P'tit Jean, as his friends call him, has farmed his vines organically since the beginning but has never sought certification. The rest is a matter of tradition: harvesting by hand, whole bunch vinification, carbonic maceration, and maturation for 5 months in vats. Unfined, unfiltered, just a pinch of sulphur.
Jean Foillard
Jean Foillard, P'tit Jean to his friends, joined his family’s estate of 8 hectares in 1981. Son and grandson of vignerons, one could say it was simply in the order of things that he’d return to the fold. Today, the renown of his wines has made him a revered giant of Beaujolais. At the celebrated Côte de Py vineyard site, Jean creates natural wines while following the precepts of Jules Chauvet....
