Álvaro de Castro has been at the helm of Quinta da Pellada since 1980, a centuries-old estate whose first traces date back to… 1527! Trained as an engineer, he made the bold move to leave everything behind to fully dedicate himself to the success of Quinta da Pellada… a winning bet. Viticulture and winemaking quickly paid off, and Álvaro revived a family tradition that had been interrupted for a generation. What a journey since then… The first vintage from Quinta de Saes, a sister estate to Quinta da Pellada, came out in 1989 — nearly 40 years ago! Today, alongside his daughter Maria Castro, winemaker Ataíde Semedo, and oenologist Tiago Félix, Álvaro de Castro is seen as a leading figure of the Dão region. Organic wines, with a true gem in the Dão’s rich ampelographic heritage — with no fewer than 50 grape varieties across the two estates. A favorite for us, soon to be one for you!
