A blend of 40% Syrah, 40% Sérine and 20% Viognier from very old vines planted between 1896 and 1989, farmed organically on a terraced vineyard of dark migmatite and biotite soils. "Bassenon" is not the name of a vineyard site but comes from the name of the stream that runs across the bottom of the hillside. The grapes are harvested by hand at low yields. Vinification: after carbonic maceration, with no added sulphur, the wine is matured 24 months in old oak barrels from the Tronçais forest. Neither fined nor filtered, and no added sulphites.
Jean-Michel Stéphan, a man who respects and draws inspiration from the past, while also being modern and innovative, created his estate in 1991. It stretches over 4.5 ha in the Côte-Rôtie, including such legendary vineyard sites as Tupin, Semons and Bassenon.
