This Syrah is cultivated biodynamically, in a cool growing area, on a soil of highly decomposed granite soil known as "Gore" and loamy-clay. The parcel is situated in the "Sommet des Arlettes" vineyard site, facing east and north. The vines are 55 years old on average. The vinification is simply a continuity of his natural approach in the vines: indigenous yeasts, 100% destemming, light punching down of the cap, fermentation in a 16-hl cement egg. Maturation: 18 months in a 600-litre cement egg. Vacuum sealed at bottling, without filtering or fining, and 1 g/hl of sulphur.
Matthieu Barret has been making wine at Domaine du Coulet since 1998. It was Stéphane Tissot, one of Jura's most famous vignerons, who first gave Barret the nickname "Petit Ours Brun" (little brown bear), and it quickly caught on among his vigneron peers, and even found its way onto his wine labels, such as his red and white cuvées Petit Ours Brun and Petit Ours Blanc.
